Funny, I thought the “fire” he brought referred to Promethean fire, thus rejecting strictly imposed theistic views for humanitarian ones; also, in the meantime, alluding to his punishment, which in itself is Absurd (in the philosophical sense).

Of course, the song is then brilliantly Absurd, in its full glory- he asks the materialist and priest not to be too attached to their views (“lies”; the universe is ultimately irrational, godless), but also realizes this is born from the conflict of both, of their desire for clarity, unity: but he simply cannot partake in it, not any longer. The clash between all of them, of course (and confrontation is from whence the Absurd rises) is in the implied Promethean myth- he is chained to that rock where an eagle eats his liver every day (as an act of consumerism; also note the eagle as the symbol of Zeus, god of the skies).

So yeah. Just needed my own try at it

I feel exactly the same as “blinkfenix” does when it comes to my teachers. I’m continously dumbfounded by the sheer amount of resources that schools in the western world poor into teaching their students utterly useless skills like the ones mentioned here.
“With a little French philosophy under my belt, there was no end to my capacity to spew bullshit.” is one of the single most awesomely true statements I have ever read.

I’m about a year from a PhD in English. I google-fu’ed my way to your blog post, and my heart grew three sizes today. O mighty writer of this blog post, I <3 you.

If your degree in English didn’t take you down the rabbit hole that is the PhD, a little context: regularly shutting down higher brain function in a variety of ways is absolutely essential for maintaining a sense of perspective in this nut-house. I arrived at your blog post because Let it Rock is about midway through my jogging play list, and that’s the only time I hear it–when the endorphins have kicked in and higher brain function mercifully shuts down.

Today, for the first time, I vaguely processed some of the lyrics and panicked a little. OMFG, is my inspired running inspired by some religious shit going down in this song? WTF is Lil Wayne doing in an Xian rock song? Have I gone round the bend? Did I accidentally deconstruct myself into a puddle of socially constructed whatnot?

“With a little French philosophy under my belt, there was no end to my capacity to spew bullshit.” Truer words were never blogged. I’m off to read everything else ever published on this blog, but I just wanted to say, you are a goddamn national treasure.

reminds me of highschool english where i just spewed tonnes of bs to make my point valid and get my teacher to give me marks.
also reminds me of my philosophy exam, one question on it worth 100mks
“Why?” the answer was simple and yet people wrote page one page of mere bullshit when the answer was as simple as the question > Why not?
i got 100/100 for writing two words and was the first one out.

Oh heavens, this reads so much like several of my college papers that I actually had flash-backs of Victorian literature (in which I wrote the final paper on how the “dumb blonde” jokes all stem from Victorian prejudices, as seen in like fifteen different works that I talked about… it was priceless.)

P.S. Your brain is damn sexy. Keep up the bullshit… it’s always a pleasure to read.

It does require an improbable degree of creative interpretation to view “Closer” as pro-Christian in any way or shape or form. I almost wish I had majored in English myself, just so I could even consider the possibility.
